Correspondence, 1884-1934.

Consists chiefly of Sir William Rothenstein's correspondence with various family members. William Rothenstein's letters describe his life and travels (in Europe and India), his works, commissions, exhibitions, opinions of museums, family life, social engagements, and reflections on politics and society. Some of these letters include small pen-and-ink sketches. Correspondence with his father, Moritz Rothenstein, discusses family matters, finances, and William's painting. William's correspondence with his brothers, Albert Rutherston and Charles Rutherston, discuss art and artists. Rutherston's letters describe his travels in Egypt. There is also some correspondence of Lady Alice Rothenstein with various family members.

William Rothenstein was born in 1872 in Bradford. He studied art at the Slade School 1888-9 and in Paris at the Académie Julian from 1889 - 1893. Although he painted landscapes, people and architectural subjects he specialised in portraiture and published several series of lithographs from 1893, completing 800 portraits by 1926.
